The bloody feud between Forbes and Gordon was one of Scotland’s most public and enduring. The rivalry began in the 12th and 13th centuries with competing loyalties, was exacerbared by grabs for land and power in the 14th and 15th centuries, flared with murders and battles on both sides, and was barely mitigated by intermarriage and Acts of Parliament.

The House of Forbes first met the Lindsays on the battlefield at Arbroath in 1446 when the Lindsays slew Sir William Forbes, 1st Lord Pitsligo. The Forbeses and their allies eventually beat the Lindsays at the 1452 Battle of Brechin.

The feud between Clan Forbes and Clan Leslie started in 1400 with a Leslie stealing and marrying the fiancée of a Forbes – and ended with a Forbes purchasing the Barony of Leslie, thus becoming Forbes of Leslie.

At the age of about 12, William accompanied his father to the 1452 Battle of Brechin. With forces under the command of Alexander Seton, Earl of Huntly, they defeated the rebel army of Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford. His behavior during the battle was certainly noted by the Earl of Huntley, who later approved William’s marriage to his daughter Christian Gordon.Learn more here.

James Forbes, 2nd Lord Forbes, (circa 1424 - 1462) benefitted greatly from his father’s great fortune, land, and influence. As the son of Elizabeth, daughter of George Douglas, Earl of Angus, and granddaughter of Robert III by his daughter Mary, he was first cousin once removed to King James II. He added to that heritage in his own right.

The 1411 Battle of Harlaw was the making of the House of Forbes. Alexander Forbes, son of Sir John of the Black Lip, so distinguished himself that his commander the Earl of Mar, rewarded him with vast estates; he was awarded the title of the first Lord Forbes; and he was able to marry Elizabeth, granddaughter of Robert III.
